CIRA Announces Formal Revisions To Implement New WHOIS Policy
The Canadian Internet Registration Authority has issued a news release announcing revisions to a number of its policies, rules and procedures, which are required to formally implement its new WHOIS Policy. These revisions will become effective on June 10, 2008. As reported in an earlier posting, the changes to the .CA WHOIS Policy will permit individual registrants of .CA domain names to not publicly disclose their WHOIS information.

Some are saying that this new privacy policy gives too much protection to people who are infringing upon the i.p. rights of others, by using domain names they don’t have any right to use. How do you send a standard cease and desist letter if you don’t know who to send it to? There are supposed to be policies in place for CIRA to forward correspondence to domain name holders after the new policy takes effect, but this seems cumbersome and impractical, and would increase the costs for trademark owners to police their marks.
